How We Work With Our Makers
Eco Intimates is a small, independently owned lingerie label. Our garments are made in Bali through direct relationships with small, home-based makers rather than large-scale factories.
I work personally with my makers on sampling and production and visit each of their workspaces around 2-3 times each year.
Our makers
I currently work with three small sewing businesses in Bali.
One is run by Ibu Eke from her home, where she works on pattern making, sampling and some cutting alongside her husband. She also works with a regular home-based sewer who sews Eco Intimates garments from her own home.
My Bella and sleepwear ranges are made by independent home-based sewers who work directly with me and sew the garments themselves.
How our makers are paid
My makers set their own sewing prices.
For each style, they quote me a price for making the garment. I supply and pay for the fabrics and trims separately, so their quoted price is for their sewing work.
I generally accept the price quoted rather than negotiating down the cost of their labour.
Production timelines
My makers tell me when they can fit Eco Intimates production into their workload and how long a production run will take.
I work around the timelines they give me rather than imposing production deadlines or requiring overtime.
Once a production order and price are agreed, I honour the full order and agreed sewing price.
Our labour standards
Eco Intimates expects everyone involved in making our garments to:
- work voluntarily, with no forced or child labour
- work in a clean and safe environment
- be treated fairly and without discrimination or harassment
- have control over their working hours and workload
- be free to accept or decline work
- be free to organise or associate with worker groups
- be able to raise concerns without retaliation
- agree to the price paid for their work
These expectations are discussed directly with my makers as part of our ongoing working relationships.
Direct oversight
I personally visit all of the home-based workspaces where Eco Intimates garments are made, around 2-3 times each year.
These visits allow me to see first-hand where and how our garments are produced, discuss sampling and production directly with my makers, and maintain an ongoing understanding of their working environment.
Small-batch production
I deliberately produce in small quantities.
I use previous sales and, where appropriate, pre-orders to help determine how much to make. This allows me to avoid unnecessary overproduction and work at a scale that suits both Eco Intimates and the small makers I work with.
